Tomato ketchup production is under threat???
According to a new study, ketchup is made from red, sweet, juicy, and ripe tomatoes, which are at risk due to rising temperatures. A team of researchers led by Aarhus university in denmark has created a mathematical model. Which has been told in the study that how rapidly increasing temperature will affect the production of tomatoes. According to the study, Italy, china and california are the largest tomato-producing countries in the world. Which are the supplier of two-thirds of tomatoes globally. And all of them are threatened by global warming.
The world tomato crop will be halved by 2050
According to the mathematical model, the way the temperature is increasing in the coming years, the tomato crop will also be affected at the same speed. The research further states that tomato production will decline by 6% by 2050. The worst-case scenario includes a temperature increase of about 2.6 °C between 2040 and 2069 in tomato growing regions and 5 °C for the next 30 years.
The processing of tomatoes used to make tomato paste and ketchup will drop from the current 14 million tonnes to less than seven million tonnes in the 11 largest producers globally. The price of the producer will increase and it will have a huge impact on the prices of all products.
How can we save tomato production from decreasing?
Farmers during periods of drought may need to implement management strategies under limited water supply. A better understanding of General Data Dissemination Systems (GDDs) on the right way of water conservation can help farmers. The same methods of increasing soil resistance and fertilizer capacity and with the help of hybrid seeds growing in time can help in increasing the crop and production.
