How many women run their own businesses?
According to the Sixth Economic Census, out of a total of 5.23 crore businesses in India, 80.5 lakh (15.40%) businesses are run by women. Out of these, 83.20% businesses are such where no employee works.
86.85% women's businesses in villages and 76.33% women's businesses in cities are such where no employee works. About 65.12% women's businesses are in villages, while only 34.88% are in cities. Out of the total women's businesses, 34.3% are related to agriculture. Out of a total of 10.30 crore working people in India, 1.34 crore (13.08%) people work in women's businesses.
Do women want to become entrepreneurs or is it a compulsion?
Economic Census data shows that most women run small businesses, especially in villages. Most of these are related to agriculture and very few women are able to keep employees. This shows that perhaps they do not have any other option, so they are doing this work under compulsion.
Although business done under compulsion also helps women to earn some money, but real progress happens when women start some work with their own will and skill, then it creates jobs, new things are made and the economy gets strengthened.
The good thing is that if we look at the data of the fifth and sixth economic census, it is known that the number of women's businesses has increased. While in the fifth census 9.50% of the businesses were owned by women, in the sixth census it has increased to 15.40%. The number of people working in women's businesses has also increased.
