The first brand that comes to mind when we talk about milk and dairy products in india is AMUL. It is not just a brand, but an example of India's self-reliance and cooperation. AMUL, whose full name is 'Anand Milk Union Limited', not only showed india the way from a 'milk-deficient' country to becoming the 'largest milk producer', but also changed the lives of millions of farmers. This is the story of the success of AMUL, which is recognized as a model all over the world today.
A dream and struggle
The foundation of AMUL was laid in 1946, when farmers of Kheda district of gujarat raised their voice against the unjust system. At that time, farmers trapped in the clutches of british rule and big dairy businessmen did not get fair prices for milk. Fed up with this situation, under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai patel and Morarji Desai, farmers formed a cooperative society, which was named 'Kheda district Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited'. This organization later took the form of AMUL.
Dr. Verghese Kurien, who is known as the 'Father of India's White Revolution', gave a new direction to this movement. Under his leadership, AMUL not only got fair prices to the farmers, but also brought about a revolution in the production and distribution of milk.
Beginning of the Milk Revolution
'Operation Flood', started in 1970, took AMUL's success to new heights. It was the world's largest dairy development program, aimed at making india self-sufficient in terms of milk. Under this program, AMUL created a network of dairy cooperatives in every village. Farmers were trained, technical assistance was provided to improve the quality of milk and an efficient supply chain was developed. The success of Operation Flood can be judged from the fact that in 1970 india was a milk-deficient country, but by 1998 it became the world's largest milk producer. AMUL played a leading role in this revolution.
