FSSAI strict against adulterators in view of holi and Ramzan!

In view of the upcoming festivals including holi and ramzan in Delhi, the Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has intensified the campaign against adulterators. The Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has directed all the states and union territories to increase strict monitoring on dairy products during the month of March. Their demand increases during the festive season. This step is necessary to prevent food adulteration and mislabeling.

FSSAI is running a monthly product-specific monitoring campaign to prevent food adulteration and implement food safety rules. Since the consumption of dairy products is high during festivals, it has been asked to keep a special watch on it in March.

What is considered a dairy product?

As per the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, dairy analogues are those products in which milk components are partially or fully replaced by non-dairy ingredients but resemble milk or milk products in appearance, texture and functionality.

Further, dairy analogues are not considered milk, milk products or whole milk products. Under this process, standardized milk products are considered dairy analogues if the major milk components (such as milk fat or milk protein) are replaced with vegetable oil, fat or protein.

As per FSSAI regulations, “dairy analogue” is defined as a product in which non-dairy ingredients partially or fully replace milk components and the final product resembles milk, milk product or whole milk product in appearance. As per the Food Safety and Standards Regulations 2011, non-dairy products should not be presented as milk or milk based products. In view of the ongoing concerns regarding the standards and labelling of dairy analogue products and the tendency to misrepresent them as dairy products, FSSAI has directed all state authorities to conduct stringent testing and label checking.
