Iran Prepares for Finger Amputations-why such punishment?
Iran is going to give such a punishment to three people, due to which it is under global criticism. international human rights organization Amnesty international has warned that the iran administration is preparing to cut off the fingers of three prisoners. They were accused of robbery in the year 2019 and are currently lodged in Urmia Central Jail.
All three prisoners were sentenced to organ harvesting and in march they were informed that they would be given this punishment soon. The names of these three prisoners are Hadi Rostami, Mehdi Sharafian and Mehdi Shahivand. Amnesty international has strongly criticized this cruel decision of iran and its inhuman laws and called it a direct torture against international law and an attack on human dignity.
All three prisoners have denied the allegations against them. They say that confessions were forcibly taken from them. The prisoners said that they were beaten, flogged and tortured by hanging them upside down. Hades Rostami said that his wrist was broken, while Mehdi Shahivand has accused the jail officials of threatening to rape him. In october last year, two prisoners were given similar punishment. Both of them are brothers and were lodged in Urmia jail.
An Iranian government radio had reported in 2010 that in a single month that year, there were two such cases in which the hands of criminals were chopped off. The crime of one of them was that he had stolen from a chocolate shop.
Amnesty international has also released a report regarding the hanging in 2024. The report said that after 2015, the highest number of death penalty cases have been reported in 2024. In this too, iran is at the forefront, followed by saudi arabia and Iraq. In 2024, 1,518 prisoners were hanged worldwide, out of which 91 percent cases are from these three countries. In iran alone, 973 people were hanged, while in saudi arabia 345 people and in iraq at least 63 people were given death sentence.
