An outage that brought down several of the internet's most well-known companies, including whatsapp, Instagram, and Facebook. Around noon Eastern time (1600 GMT), these apps went offline, in what website monitoring company Downdetector described as the largest such failure it has ever seen. Some facebook users commenced recovering partial access to the three applications around 5:45 p.m. ET.

The outage was the firm's second setback in as many days, following a whistleblower's accusation on sunday that the corporation has consistently prioritised profit before cracking down on hate speech and disinformation. Facebook's stock plummeted 4.9 per cent on Monday, its largest daily decline since November, amid a larger selloff in technology companies. facebook has over 2 billion regular live users.

Mike Schroepfer, Facebook's Chief technology Officer, apologised to everyone who had been inconvenienced.

Security experts believe the outage was caused by an internal error, however, sabotage by an insider is technically feasible.

By 8 a.m. IST, whatsapp had announced that they were back online. said on its twitter account Thanked everyone for their patience today as their staff worked tirelessly to restore whatsapp throughout the world. They are grateful to everyone and continue to be humbled by the number of people and organisations that rely on their app on a daily basis.
