Leopards making home close to human habitats!!!

Eight leopards have been caught on camera in Delhi's Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary. Also 2-4 striped hyenas were also seen. Leopards have been found roaming on the same track once or sometimes even twice in the same week. This shows that they have made this urban forest their permanent home. Data from the study, which was started in june 2021, was collected using camera traps. It captured 111 pictures of leopards. In these pictures, 8 leopards were found in Asola Bhati Sanctuary, which is spread over 32.71 sq km.

This report has been found by bombay Natural history Society (BNHS) and delhi Forest Department after monitoring the Asola Bhatti Sanctuary which is part of the Ridge of South delhi for a year. The report drawn up over a year's study to document the presence and distribution of leopards and other mammals in the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary (ABWS) has some key parts.

Fear of being trapped inside animals

BNHS director Sohail madan said, “One of the reasons for the study was to show that Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary is not an ecological island. If you build a sanctuary, build a boundary wall and avenues around it, it becomes like a zoo, where animals get trapped inside and are not fit to live for long.

Madan explained that there are some areas of the sanctuary where hyenas follow leopards and live side by side. He said that scavengers like hyenas chase predators like leopards. The report said that this reflects a similar hunting base which is surprising.

Leopards used to come to drink water near the blue lake

It has also been revealed in the report that the area around the Neeli Lake located in the sanctuary is one of the areas where leopards often come to drink water. Blue lakes are a source of water for animals. Leopards mostly hunt forest monkeys in their diet.
