Student suicides are on the rise in telangana and AP...

It's a never-ending saga of student suicides at educational institutions in telangana and Andhra Pradesh, from residential schools to colleges, from professional colleges and universities to institutions like IITs. While peer pressure and study stress are the primary causes of a significant number of suicides, other factors such as depression, marital problems, and occasionally even ragging are also motivating students to take their own lives. On august 7, a postgraduate student at the indian Institute of Technology, hyderabad (IIT-H), age 21, was discovered hanged in her residence hall room.

Mamitha Nayak, a first-year graduate student, recently enrolled in the master's programme in civil engineering at the Kandi campus in the sangareddy district, about 60 kilometres from Hyderabad. She left a suicide note in her room, in which she claimed that no one was to blame for her passing and that she was experiencing extreme mental stress. She was the fourth IIT-H student to commit suicide in the past 12 months and the second in less than a month.

D. karthik (age 21), who was depressed over his backlogs, committed suicide by drowning in the sea at Visakhapatnam. He had left campus on July 17 while a second-year B. Tech (Mechanical) student. On July 25, authorities found his body on a beach in Visakhapatnam. The student, who was from Miryalguda in Telangana's nalgonda district, was upset about not being able to make up missed exams.

In one academic year, four IIT-H students have committed suicide. Megha Kapur (22), a resident of Rajasthan, committed suicide by jumping from a hotel in sangareddy town, close to the IIT hyderabad campus, in september of last year.
