How will the education level of universities improve?

Retired economist professor Arun Kumar from JNU said, 'When there is a person at the top level (Vice Chancellor) in the university who knows how to generate new information, only then will some change come. Currently, mostly those people are appointed who have political pressure or money power.' He further said, 'If the governor of the state and the Chairman of UGC were working as an independent person, they would not have worked as an agent of the center, then today the situation would have been different. Then we could have expected that the candidate for the post of Vice Chancellor would be an informed person. But, most of the Vice Chancellor candidates coming today are of one ideology. They have nothing to do with the academy.'

Does the government have no interest in information generation?

Professor Arun Kumar said - The state government wants the Vice Chancellor of the university to be a person over whom they have control. The central government wants a person with the ideology of its party to be the Vice ChancellorIn such a situation, whether it is the state government or the central government, both just want their control over the university. They have nothing to do with information generation.

The professor says that today mostly the ruling political party appoints the vice chancellor. Because earlier there was more interference of the state government, so to reduce it, UGC has made a new rule. With this, now all the power will go in the hands of the governor and the chairman of UGC is also appointed by the central government. Under the new rule, the three members joining the selection committee have become people with the same ideology. If all the vice chancellors are politically appointed, then it is difficult to expect anything new from the university.

However, on this, professor CP Singh said, 'There is no doubt that governments have been working with political objectives. But we can expect from the current central government that it does not work with political objectives.'
