Do you have dry eyes? Should worry about it..?

According to a recent study, improving your gut health may help you improve your eye disease! Confused? A Baylor college of Medicine research team has identified a potential advancement in the treatment of dry eye conditions. The research, which was presented at ASM Microbe 2023, the American Society for Microbiology's annual meeting, demonstrates how a widely available probiotic bacterial strain can reduce the signs of dry eye in an animal model.

According to Dr. ravindra Mohan, Honorary professor of Ophthalmology at Dr. mgr Medical university and director of Trinethra Eye Care in Chennai, "Although this finding originates from an animal study and further research is needed to bridge the gap between bench and bedside," it presents exciting possibilities for future therapeutic interventions.

According to Dr. Mohan, in the past, people thought that dry eye was a condition that predominantly affected the elderly and people with serious illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune diseases, or chemical injuries. However, as a result of cultural shifts and increased exposure to technology, ophthalmologists are increasingly observing dry eyes in people as young as 20.

We all use to blink between 10 and 15 times every minute on average. Therefore, these tears are re-surfaced every time we blink, ensuring that any bacteria is rinsed out and serving as a protective layer. One of the main causes of the rise in dry eyes, according to Dr. Mohan, has been a significant increase in device use.
