What is an infection with the Nipah virus?
Nipah is a zoonotic illness, meaning it can spread to people from infected animals or tainted food. According to the WHO, it can also be passed directly from one person to another by coming into contact with someone who is infected. The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists a high temperature, a headache, cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing, and vomiting as some of its symptoms. In extreme cases, encephalitis (brain swelling), seizures, disorientation, drowsiness, and death may occur.
