According to a report, Consumer Reports, an American non-profit organization, investigated various chocolate products. This investigation found that out of 48 chocolate products tested, almost one-third of the products had dangerous levels of heavy metals like lead and cadmium. The organization has requested Hershey's, one of America's largest chocolate manufacturing companies, to reduce the amount of these heavy metals in its products. A total of 48 products from 7 categories including dark chocolate bars, milk chocolate bars, cocoa powder, and chocolate chips were examined in the study. Of these, 16 products were found to contain potentially harmful amounts of lead, cadmium, or both.


Causes diseases like cancer

This study found that many chocolates had high amounts of heavy metals like lead and cadmium. These metals can cause serious health problems. Long-term lead consumption can cause problems like brain damage, kidney disease, and high blood pressure. At the same time, long-term consumption of cadmium can cause bone erosion and damage to the lungs and liver. Prolonged consumption of these metals can also cause fatal diseases like cancer.

Harmful for pregnant women

Lead and cadmium present in chocolate can prove to be extremely harmful to the health of pregnant women and children. Consumption of these metals during pregnancy can affect the brain and physical development of the fetus.
