History of Manipur

Manipur is one of those states of the country which are very beautiful. This state is situated between the mountain valleys. The total population of Manipur is around 35 lakhs. Now first of all let us know what has been the history of Manipur. The old name of Manipur was Kangleipath, after which the Meitei king changed it and named the state Manipur. Manipur is like a bowl, that is, there are hills all around and Imphal valley in the middle. Tribes live in the ills spread all around. That is, people of different tribes live, while the people of the other community Meitei live in the valley below. The third community here is Naga, who live only in the hilly areas.

The era of Meitei King

Now it is important to tell you about the story when the existence of Manipur itself came under threat. In 1819, burma occupied Manipur, after which the Meitei king sought help from the british rule. The Britishers defeated the Burmese Kingdom in 1826 and then Manipur became a protectorate state. That is, its command is with the British rule. The british used the divide and rule formula during their rule here.

The british settled the Kuki community on the hills all around. The Meitei were already settled in the valley. The british gave the message to everyone that both the communities are completely different. That is why the Meitei will always live in the valley and the Kukis will live in the hills. It is said that the seeds of conflict were sown in Manipur from this period.
