What should be the responsibility of the Vice Chancellor?
To understand this, news agency talked to retired economist professor Arun Kumar from JNU. He said, 'The work of the university is not just administration, but their main work is to generate new information. The most important role in generating new information is that of the Vice Chancellor. This is not so easy. Cut-paste does not work here. Socially relevant new knowledge generation is necessary in society. That means creation of socially relevant new knowledge. This should be the main responsibility.'
Professor Arun Kumar further said, 'There are many universities in the country, but new information is not being generated from everywhere. Because the people there are not that capable. Due to this, students are also not able to get new information and when they go for a job, the companies say - you are not capable.'
On the other hand, professor CP Singh said, 'Universities are the center of knowledge. Their main objective is - teaching, testing, research. The Vice Chancellor should focus on research and encourage it while dealing with the challenges of that state. This will be possible only when the Vice Chancellor himself is capable and free from the negative influences of the central or state governments. Nowadays, instead of paying attention to these things, most of the Vice Chancellors are busy in pleasing those who have appointed them.'
He also said that "If the Vice Chancellor's thinking is at the center of that university, then there will be improvement. If his thinking is to become a governor, a member of a commission, become the Vice Chancellor of another university or to please his bosses, then your university will definitely not progress. The main reason why American universities are making a name for themselves in the world today is that their heads are free from external influences. If they take any external influence, it is the influence of knowledge. They accept the challenge of knowledge, and also teach their faculty and students to accept it."
