What is the reason for more riots in 2024?
Most communal riots occurred during religious festivals or processions. 26 of the 59 riots, or almost half, occurred due to these reasons. These included four during the Praan Pratishtha ceremony at the ram temple in Ayodhya, four during Ganesh Chaturthi, seven during Saraswati idol immersion in Bihar, two each on ram Navami and Bakrid, and one each on Muharram, Urs, Durga idol immersion, Eid Milad-un-Nabi, Kartik Puja and a local Hindu procession.
6 communal riots occurred due to disputes over places of worship. Mainly some groups kept calling mosques and dargahs illegal or alleged that they were built on Hindu places of worship. This story kept the communal atmosphere heated and increased tension in many places.
5 communal riots occurred due to desecration of places of worship. One incident occurred in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, when a calf's severed head was found in a temple. The second incident occurred in Bhilwara, Rajasthan, when a piece of cow's tail was found in a temple. The third communal riot took place in Jirania in Tripura when an idol of Goddess kali was defaced. Stones were thrown at a mosque near Surathka in Bengaluru, Karnataka. In Hyderabad, a person allegedly tried to damage the idol of the local deity in a temple in Muthyalamma area.
