How many nuclear power plants are there in India?
India currently has 7 major nuclear power plants which are contributing to energy production across the country. The total production capacity of the reactors of these plants is 5780 MW and these plants produce about 30,292.91 GWh of electricity every year. Construction of many of these reactors is ongoing and the country is getting very stable and clean energy from them.
1. Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant- Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is located in Tirunelveli district of tamil Nadu. This plant has been set up in collaboration with russia and has a total of two reactors with a capacity of 2000 MW. This plant is India's first nuclear plant, which uses pressurized water reactor (PWR) technology imported from Russia. Work is now underway to add more reactors to Kudankulam, which will enable this plant to produce even more electricity.
2. Tarapur Nuclear Power Plant - Tarapur Nuclear Power Plant located in maharashtra is India's first nuclear power plant. It was started in the year 1969. It has two units which produce 1400 MW of electricity. This plant is one of the oldest and important nuclear power plants in india and its contribution to energy production is significant.
3. Kakrapar Nuclear Power Plant - The nuclear power plant located in Kakrapar, gujarat has a total of two reactors and its production capacity is about 1140 MW. The construction of the reactors of the Kakrapar plant is also an important step towards promoting India's indigenous technological development. Apart from this, the construction of another reactor is going on in Kakrapar, which will increase the production capacity.
4. Rawatbhata Nuclear Power Plant - The operation of Rawatbhata Nuclear Power Plant located in rajasthan is also an important part of the indian nuclear energy program. A total of 6 reactors are working here, whose total production capacity is about 1,180 MW. This plant is one of the major nuclear energy sources of india and reactors are being developed here based on new technologies.
5. Kalpakkam Nuclear Power Plant- The nuclear plant located in Kalpakkam, tamil Nadu has two reactors and this plant also holds an important place under the Indian nuclear energy program. Here too, the upgrade and expansion work of the reactors is going on. The Kalpakkam plant is likely to produce more electricity in the coming years.
6. Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant- The Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant, located in Uttara kannada district of karnataka state, is one of the important nuclear power plants in India. This plant has a total of 4 reactors with a total production capacity of 880 MW. The first two reactors were activated in 2000 and 2001 while the work of the remaining two reactors started in 2010 and 2017. The reactors of the Kaiga plant are used to solve India's energy crisis, as well as provide clean energy to save the environment. The Kaiga plant follows high standards in terms of safety and environmental impacts.
7. Narora Atomic Power Plant- Narora Atomic Power Plant is located in the Narora area of bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh. The plant has 2 reactors with a total generation capacity of 440 MW. It is operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of india (NPCIL) and is one of the oldest nuclear plants in India. The main objective of the Narora plant is to solve the power crisis of North india, providing stable and clean energy to the people of the region. The plant operates with high safety technical standards, with special attention to safety measures in emergency situations.
