
How are OTT platforms regulated in India?
OTT i.e. Over the Top is the name given to those platforms which are providing video and audio content via the internet. Like Netflix, amazon Prime, YouTube, Disney Hotstar. Such platforms are becoming very popular among the youth these days.
OTT platforms in india are regulated under the "IT Rule". Under this, the content is monitored and the platforms have to follow certain rules from their content, such as properly categorizing the content, restricting adult content to the right age audience, etc.
Why is a new legal framework needed?
Although there are currently some stringent rules on OTT platforms under the IT Rules, 2021, there are still many problems regarding pornographic and violent content on these platforms. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has asked these platforms under interim guidelines to make age-based classification for "A-rated content" so that children can be protected from insensitive content.
What is the next step of the government?
On february 19, the ministry has directed social media and OTT platforms to implement the wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital media Ethics Code, which will order these platforms to ensure that they broadcast only legally and ethically correct content.
The ministry says that social media and OTT platforms should be regulated under a new legal framework so that pornographic content can be effectively stopped which spreads hatred and violence in the society.
