Mindfulness activities for kids-let’s know!
Mindfulness activities can be a great way to help kids develop emotional awareness and focus. Here are some simple and fun mindfulness exercises tailored for children:
Mindful Breathing: Guide kids to take slow, deep breaths, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. You can make this fun by pretending to blow up a balloon or by counting the breaths together. This helps children focus on their breathing and calm their minds.
Body Scan: Ask kids to lie down comfortably and slowly “scan” their body, starting from their toes up to their head. Encourage them to notice how each body part feels, whether tense or relaxed. This helps kids become more aware of physical sensations and promotes relaxation.
5 Senses Exercise: Have children pause and focus on each of their five senses. Ask them to identify:
5 things they can see (e.g., a tree, a book, etc.)
4 things they can feel (e.g., the floor, their clothes, etc.)
3 things they can hear (e.g., birds, cars, etc.)
2 things they can smell (e.g., flowers, food)
1 thing they can taste (e.g., a snack, water) This activity grounds children in the present moment.
Mindful Coloring: Provide coloring sheets with intricate patterns. Encourage kids to color slowly and mindfully, paying attention to the colors, the feel of the crayon, and how the design develops. This activity promotes focus and creativity.
Gratitude Journal: Ask children to write or draw three things they are grateful for each day. This helps shift their focus to positive thoughts and cultivates a sense of appreciation.
Mindful Walking: Take a walk together where kids pay attention to how their feet feel on the ground, the sights around them, and the sounds they hear. Walking mindfully connects them to the environment.
These activities help children develop emotional regulation and mindfulness skills in a fun and engaging way.
