The announcement of the passenger ferry service from chennai to pondicherry has plunged the public into a sea of joy. sunil Paliwal, Chairman and Managing director, Ports, chennai and ennore, told reporters about the activities during the last financial year:


The Port of chennai has emerged as the full owner of the ennore Kamaraj Port following the recent acquisition of a 50 per cent stake in the ennore Kamaraj Port by the Central Government. During the last financial year, chennai Port handled about 49 million tonnes of cargo, ennore Port handled about 39 million tonnes of cargo and the two ports together handled a total of about 87 million tonnes of cargo.



The total revenue of chennai Port during the last financial year was Rs.826 crore and that of Kamaraj Port was Rs. 827 crores are spearheads. Profit before tax was Rs. 117 crore and ennore Kamaraj Port Rs. 531 crore. Similarly, a detailed project report is being prepared for the conversion of the long-pending chennai Port Maduravayal High Level Project into a two-storey flyover.

Work is underway to start passenger shipping between chennai and pondicherry soon.
