Thailand’s government has made a major announcement that will excite travelers from India: indian citizens can now enjoy a visa-free stay of up to 60 days in thailand, thanks to a recent extension of the visa relaxation policy. Initially set to end on november 11, 2024, this regulation has been extended, giving indian visitors more freedom and flexibility to explore thailand without the need for a visa.

The move is part of a broader strategy to boost tourism in the Southeast Asian region. thailand, along with neighboring countries like Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam, has seen significant growth in visitor numbers this year. Together, these nations welcomed an impressive 70 million tourists in 2024, a figure that reflects the resurgence of travel to the region. Many of these visitors were Indians, who are increasingly drawn to Southeast Asia’s vibrant culture, scenic landscapes, and affordable travel options.

To capitalize on this trend, Thai prime minister Shretha Thavisin has proposed a visionary idea: the creation of a Schengen-style visa for Southeast Asia. Similar to the european Union's Schengen Visa, this regional visa would allow tourists to visit multiple countries in Southeast Asia with a single visa. According to Bloomberg, the proposal, if implemented, could redefine travel across the region, making it easier than ever for tourists to experience the diversity of Southeast Asia in one seamless trip.

The decision is expected to further boost Thailand’s position as a top destination, especially among indian travelers, while contributing to the economic vitality of the broader Southeast Asian tourism industry.
