What steps should govt take to make Operation Green successful?
In response to this question, professor of economics at patna University, Sunita Srivastava Budget said that the government should ensure full and effective use of the budget allocated under Operation Greens. To ensure the proper use of the budget, government institutions should spend on the construction of storage facilities, processing units, and cold storage on a priority basis. This will allow farmers to store their crops, so that they can avoid spoilage and keep their produce until they get good prices.
Making farmers aware and training them- Apart from this, it is also very important to make farmers aware about the scheme and give them complete information about its benefits. For this, farmers should be trained through government information centers and agriculture department, so that they can understand the processes of storage, processing, and marketing. If farmers manage their produce properly, then their chances of getting better prices will increase. The government should improve the knowledge of farmers through online platforms and field training programs.
Reforms in export policy and re-evaluation of duties- One of the main objectives of Operation Greens was to promote the export of agricultural products, but sudden duties on exports cause losses to farmers. Export duties and export restrictions should be re-evaluated keeping in mind the benefits of farmers. If maximum quantity of farmers' products is sent abroad, their income will increase. For this, flexibility and incentives are needed in export policies.
