Women get employment in cities, men are unemployed?
The increasing employment participation of women in urban areas and the increasing unemployment rate among men, both are signs of an important change for the society. While on the one hand women have crossed traditional social barriers and strengthened their foothold in different fields, on the other hand the lack of employment opportunities for men is increasing. This imbalance is not only affecting the economic structure within families, but is also giving rise to new social and mental pressures in the society.
What does the data say?
Recently, researchers from the Great Lakes Institute of Management (GLIM) have released a report. According to which, in the year 2023-24, the unemployment rate among men between the ages of 20 to 24 was seen at 10%, while this rate among women was seen to be less than men i.e. 7.5%. Similarly, the unemployment rate of men in the age group of 25-29 years is also 7.2%, which is higher than women.
This unemployment figure shows that employment opportunities for women are increasing in urban areas as compared to men, but these opportunities are decreasing for men. Researchers at the Great Lakes Institute of Management (GLIM) also found that women's employment in urban india has increased by 10% in the last few years.
While from the year 2017-18 to 2023-24, the employment rate among urban women has reached 28%. Interestingly, this year the employment rate among urban women aged 40 years and above was recorded to be the highest at 38.3%. This indicates that women are now able to focus more on their careers after their children grow up.
