The trend of electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing rapidly in India. People are preferring electric vehicles to reduce pollution and get rid of the rising prices of petrol and diesel. But, have you ever wondered what will be the future of electric vehicles in India? Will we really be able to completely replace petrol and diesel vehicles?
By 2030, electric vehicle sales in india are expected to increase by 27%. That is, one out of every four vehicles will be an electric vehicle. But to make this dream come true, some challenges have to be faced. The biggest challenge among them is the lack of charging stations and their poor condition.

In the year 2024, there has been a tremendous jump in the sale of electric vehicles in the country. A total of 19.50 lakh electric vehicles were sold in the entire year. If we talk about the share of electric vehicles in total vehicle sales, then it was 7.44%. That is, out of every 100 vehicles, about 7 vehicles were electric. These figures have been taken from a portal named 'VAHAN', on which vehicles are registered.
While the share of EV vehicles was only 0.01% in 2014-15, it has increased to 7.31% in 2024-25. That is, people are now gradually starting to like electric vehicles. The government is also running many schemes to promote electric vehicles, the effect of which is visible.
How much has the trend of electric vehicles increased since 2014-15?
According to the e-vehicle portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the number of registrations of electric vehicles has increased manifold since 2014-15. In 2014-15, a total of 193.98 lakh ICE vehicles were registered, while EV registrations were only 0.02 lakh, which was 0.01% of the total registrations. The next few years saw a slow but steady increase in EV registrations. In 2018-19, EV registrations reached 1.47 lakh, which was 0.58% of the total registrations.
A major change was seen in 2021-22, when EV registrations increased to 4.59 lakh, which was 2.49% of the total registrations. In 2023-24, this figure increased to 16.81 lakh, which was 6.82% of the total registrations. Then in 2024-25, this figure increased to 17.84 lakh, which was 7.31% of the total registrations.
