doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron reveals a potential new love interest for Benedict Cumberbatch's title character in the future. This weekend, the highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe film was released in theatres, receiving mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences. The new film sees stephen Strange on a mission to protect America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) from Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), who wants to harness her power, continuing the multiverse exploration begun in previous films such as WandaVision, What If...?, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The mid-credits scene in doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featured one of the film's most surprising surprise appearances. The titular sorcerer is seen going down the street when he is accosted by a sorceress dressed in purple costume, played by charlize theron, a famed action star. She informs Strange that his actions have triggered a multiversal invasion, which he must assist halt by opening a portal to the Dark Dimension – the domain of Dormammu, as shown in doctor Strange's first film. Clea, a student, lover, and eventual wife of doctor Strange in Marvel Comics, is the latest enchantress.

Waldron discussed bringing this new persona into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and doctor Strange's existence. Clea was always the plan, he said, and he described her ties to Dormammu. He went on to say that his connection with Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) had to be settled in order for her to be properly introduced as Strange's genuine love interest, as she is in the comics. He ended by describing how, following the events of Multiverse of Madness, Strange is considering Palmer's counsel to "be open to the prospect of loving someone," which will allow Clea to appear at the right time.
