Even though Vadivelu the comedian hasn't performed in a while, his comedic one-liners endure and are a vital component of children's vocabularies in the state of tamil Nadu. That is why when Naai Sekar, his character in the latest comeback film, utters a few of his famous sentences, the Vadivelu 'fan' within pushes us to enjoy it. But that is where it all stops. The director of Naai Sekar Returns, Suraj, makes no attempt to write a compelling storyline and instead depends solely on his star's old gags and antics. The second half contains some genuinely entertaining moments, but it doesn't do anything to make the movie succeed.

Naai Sekar Returns begins by introducing two quirky kidnappers parallely - Dass (Anand Raj) and Naai Sekar (Vadivelu). While the former abducts girls, the latter kidnaps expensive dogs for money. Trouble begins when Naai Sekar kidnaps Dass's favourite pet dog giving us a lead to a face off scene. This paves way to him learning about his family's past and how their lucky dog was taken away leading to the family's fall from grace.

The second half of the film follows Naai Sekar's exploits as he tries to save his family dog from Max, a now-powerful kingpin in Hyderabad. Can Naai Sekar accomplish this mission? The plot of Vadivelu's Naai Sekar Returns is novel in many respects. It is sufficient to have a protagonist who kidnaps dogs to carry off a respectable show. The movie's screenwriter, however, utterly fails to include compelling features and subplots to keep the audience engaged. Even though we can downplay all of this by calling it some sort of mindless entertainment, the things that happen on screen don't even make people laugh.

Only anand Raj's one-liners can save the movie, and they are effective. It's entertaining to watch his scenes with Vadivelu in combination. Otherwise, the movie doesn't affect you at all and merely makes us keep a straight face the entire time. The majority of Shivani Narayanan's scenes, who plays Max's sister, take place in the second half. She has lived up to the part and performed as her character would be expected to. But if the writing had been stronger, the script would have made more sense.

It's always fun to watch Vadivelu on a big screen. He is a wonderful performer and more than just a comic, and he has given it his all. He could have actually made a comeback that would have been remembered by all of his fans with better writing and screenplay. Unfortunately! No, not now.
