Sameer ji, when did you first feel interested in poetry?

When I came to sixth or seventh standard, I used to write something and tell it to my friends. If they had praised me, I would have been encouraged. When I came to college after finishing school, our troupe was formed there for the first time. Then, we formed an organization and started holding meetings on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. After this came the turn of Kavi Sammelans, Mushayars. Opportunities started getting on All india Radio and Doordarshan as well.

Means, you took the path of becoming a lyricist during your college days?

I have done B.Com from Banaras Hindu University. My father wanted me to become anything but not a lyricist. Maybe that's why he taught me commerce instead of literature. After my B.Com, I did M.Com. Dada Shivnath prasad ji used to work in the bank and was a great artist of Ramlila. There is no such character of Ramayana that he has not played. Art runs in the veins of our family. Our great-grandfather rajaram Shastri was a great scholar. Pleased with his knowledge of scriptures, the Maharaja of Banaras donated 52 bighas of land to him, so our forefathers left Gorakhpur and came to Varanasi.

How did you come to mumbai when your father was against you becoming a lyricist?

First of all, let me tell you that my father also did not want to come to Mumbai. But, when he fell ill, he was told that the seashore air could become his lifeline. Here, after doing my M.Com, I got a job in the Central bank of india due to the prestige of my grandfather. Where am I going to get life from the applause I get in Mushairas and Kavi Sammelans and where is this bank job? Just resigned from the bank job within two days. Sat in the Kashi Express after taking 500 rupees from his mother and came here on 6 april 1980 to bow down to the land of Mumbai.

Have you ever received such a compliment on a song that became a lifetime memory?

All the stars of my time used to get happy listening to the songs at the time of recording and used to hug right there. rahul roy used to go mad listening to the songs of 'Aashiqui' in the studio itself. This is an interesting anecdote. When I got my second Filmfare award, Majrooh Sultanpuri sahib went on stage by mistake. I received the award and I also reached the stage. So I immediately took up the matter. I said that the first Filmfare award was given to me by my father and then I vowed that I will get the second award from someone whom I consider my mentor. Look fortunate that today Majrooh Sultanpuri is on stage. After that, I took the award from him. sunil dutt Saheb then sent me a letter praising it and wrote that you respected one of your seniors and brought laurels to an unknown Saheb.

The title of becoming the top lyricist in the next generation of renowned lyricists of hindi cinema is on your head. Sons of other lyricists like Asad Bhopali, and Majrooh Sultanpuri also tried. Why do you think the children of the next generation of lyricists are not able to become successful lyricists?

There can be many reasons for this. amitabh bachchan once explained to me that just because you write well, it does not guarantee that you are a superhit lyricist. It is very important for you to be educated and good. It is also very important for you to look good. You must have good manners. Your intellect should be sharp and most importantly you should have the strength to digest success. Often people go berserk after two songs become hits. He gave me 10 mantras of success. There are many lyricists in front of me whom I could not even stand. But, he got into bad habits and his bad antics drowned him
