Madhoo portrays Menaka, the mother of Samantha's Shakuntala in the movie. Madhoo discussed the movie's underwhelming box office performance in a recent interview.

Shakuntalam's poor performance makes me very upset because the film's creators and producers gave it their all. Unhone kahi bhi us picture ko dheela nahi chhoda, pre-production to release. They spent an entire year on CGI (computer-generated imagery) after filming and dubbing. They made sure to make the procedure visually appealing and never took it for granted. I observed that they never put artists or technicians under any stress when filming. They also attended to our comfort, Madhoo told DNA.

She continued by discussing the popularity of films like Baahubali and RRR. Nobody, she said, can comprehend why a movie works or doesn't work. Shakuntalam is heavily influenced by South indian mythology. No one anticipated Baahubali would be such a huge success. Even if the movie is good, nobody had anticipated that it would be a great hit. Aachi bhi bani ho toh bhi itna bada success kisi ne expect nahi kiya thi. We never expected the movie to fare poorly at the box office. Simply put, it stings since everyone put a lot of effort into this movie, she continued.
