The tamil film industry has now placed all of its expectations in ponniyin selvan 2, Mani Ratnam's historical period epic.

The film's first installment was a major commercial success in tamil Nadu, but it was a flop in other languages. The sequel to a successful movie is typically anticipated to perform higher at the box office because of the increased buzz brought on by the established brand.
