Once upon a time, the success of top heroes' films was measured by the number of days they ran in theatres. However, the current trend in the film industry has shifted, with fans now anticipating how many hundreds of crores a star hero's movie will collect upon release. This paradigm shift is evident in the tremendous growth of South indian movies, which, once struggling to reach Rs. 100 crores, are now approaching the Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000 crores and even Rs. 2000 crores mark.
In 2017, rajamouli, the acclaimed director from tollywood, achieved a remarkable feat with 'Baahubali 2,' grossing Rs. 1800 crores worldwide. He continued his success in 2022 with 'RRR,' starring ntr and ram Charan, which earned Rs. 1400 crores globally. Following 'RRR,' bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan entered the Rs. 1000 crore club last year with 'Pathan' and 'Jawan,' collecting Rs. 1050 crores and Rs. 1164 crores, respectively.
Expectations were high for salman Khan's 'Tiger 3' from bollywood and Prabhas' 'Salaar' from tollywood to join the Rs. 1000 crore club upon release. However, the actual box office numbers fell short, with 'Tiger 3' earning around Rs. 450 crores and 'Salaar' concluding its theatrical run with Rs. 600 crores worldwide. On the other hand, sandeep Reddy Vanga and Ranbir Kapoor's 'Animal' approached the Rs. 1000 crore mark, reaching Rs. 900 crores at the box office.
Shah Rukh Khan's recent film 'Dunki' failed to surpass the Rs. 500 crore mark at the box office. Looking ahead, 'Pushpa 2' is expected to lead the films crossing the Rs. 1000 crore mark this year, fuelled by significant global hype. Analysts predict that after 'Pushpa 2,' rajamouli and Mahesh Babu's upcoming project will also join the coveted Rs. 1000 crore club. The industry's focus has shifted from the duration of a film's run to the staggering box office collections, reflecting the evolving dynamics in film success metrics.
