January 22, 2024, was one of the most highly anticipated days in the history of India. It marked the inauguration ceremony of the ram mandir in Ayodhya. The whole city was decked up to celebrate this occasion. The auspicious event was attended by many prominent faces of the country which included politicians, actors and sports persons as well. Celebs like amitabh bachchan, alia bhatt, kangana ranaut, Rishab Shetty, Ranbir Kapoor, katrina kaif, Vicky Kaushal, Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajinikanth, chiranjeevi and ram charan and many others attended the ceremony. Amid all this, South star kamal haasan in an interaction with media in chennai expressed his opinion about the ceremony.
The actor-politician was asked about his opinion of the ram mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony. To this, he said, “My answer is the same as it was 30 years ago.” He was referring to the statement he had made back in 1991 when the babri masjid was demolished. kamal haasan was one of the few celebrities who reacted against the demolition and said that no one had the right to destroy Babri Masjid. He also said, “It was my building just like Tanjore temple and velankanni church are mine.”
Following the major riots in 1991, kamal haasan said that it does not make a difference whether it is a ram temple or Babri Mosque. He believes in people with the ideology of no religious differences. His staunch belief is reflected even in his 2000 movie Hey Ram. In the movie, one of the song’s lyrics read ‘Ramar Aanalum, Babar Aanalum Sneham Onu Thaan’ – which when translated means irrespective of whether it is ram or Babar, love is the same.
Later in 2020, when all the accused (including LK Advani) of the babri masjid demolition were acquitted by the supreme Court, he took to the micro-blogging site to share his opinion. He tweeted, “Is it irresponsibility of the prosecution for not presenting compelling evidence and strong arguments before justice? Or is it a planned action? Indians’ hope for justice should not go in vain.”
