Courtesan turned top actress
Pakistan's film industry Lollywood is based in Lahore, the same city that was once ruled by Heera Mandi. After partition, it became a major film industry producing films in punjabi and Urdu. Many prostitutes were recognized as actresses by film producers. It was the 60s when nargis Begum aka Niggo left Heera Mandi to become a star. Known for her dancing skills, Niggo became a top item girl in Lollywood and appeared in over 100 films. He debuted with 'Ishrat' in 1964.
Niggos became the highlight of the brothel again
In 1971, during the shooting of the film 'Kaasu', Niggo met film producer Khawaja Mazhar. The two fell in love and got married, but it was not approved by Niggo's mother, as marriage to a courtesan was always frowned upon. Niggo's mother made an excuse for her illness and brought Niggo back to Heera Mandi, where Niggo's mother threatened him and brainwashed him into living in a brothel.
Tragic end of niggas
After this Niggo stayed in Heera Mandi only. Her husband, producer Khawaja Mazhar, made several attempts to bring her back, but to no avail. On 5 January 1972, Mazhar reached Heera Mandi to convince them to return home but again failed. After this, he lost his temper and shot Niggo dead. Niggo's uncle and two musicians were also killed in the shootout. Niggo's husband was sentenced to life imprisonment by the court in a public trial and died a natural death. Niggo was buried in Mian Sahib graveyard, Lahore.
