Gulshan Devaiah’s recent comments about not "vibing" with his Ulajh co-star janhvi kapoor have sparked significant online discussion. In an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha, he clarified that he doesn't blame either of them for this dynamic.
Gulshan Devaiah on not "vibing" with Janhvi Kapoor
"I'm not saying it's my or Janhvi’s fault. There are other ways to get the job done. I never felt a lack of connection with her during a scene. It wasn't like I couldn't stand to look at her (laughs)! But you can't expect a family-like situation on every set," Gulshan Devaiah explained.
Despite this, Gulshan highlighted a positive aspect, noting that their differing approaches as actors pushed them to achieve unexpected results. "Getting along and vibing with someone are two different things. When I saw some of the scenes and the song we shot (Shaukan), I thought we didn’t vibe, but nobody could tell. This creative tussle is good as long as you’re not belittling or intentionally harming anyone because it pushes you in directions you wouldn’t have gone. The idea is to be civil, and we were very civil," he said.
Gulshan's experience with radhika apte, kalki, and Sonakshi
Gulshan contrasted this with his experience working with co-stars he shares a great off-screen rapport with, which helps build organic on-screen chemistry. Reflecting on his work in 'Hunterr', 'That girl In Yellow Boots', and 'Dahaad', he remarked, "I’ve worked with friends like radhika apte and kalki Koechlin. We spend a lot of time talking about the scenes, the characters, and everything else. We can immediately create some sort of chemistry because of the familiarity we have, and we use that sense of familiarity. When I was working with Sonakshi Sinha, we vibed, and that helped. But everybody can’t be like that."
Regarding his different working relationship with Janhvi, he explained, "We have very different ways of working. We don’t chit-chat. With Roshan (Mathew), at least, I talked about other things beyond work. But with Janhvi, nothing’s there. That said, she’s a professional actor regardless of perceptions about her, and we bring our game together because it’s our job."
Gulshan draws similarities with Rajkummar Rao
Gulshan also mentioned a similar working relationship with rajkummar rao despite their multiple collaborations in projects like Guns & Gulaabs, Badhaai Do, and Shaitan. "We just said ‘hi’ and ‘hello’ to each other and never discussed anything whenever I’ve worked with him, which I’ve done three times by now. But when you’re doing a scene, you have to go with it and do what’s required. Janhvi and I have very different approaches to working, and despite that, everything comes together because we’re professionals. We don’t talk about the scene too much," he shared.
Ulajh is scheduled for a theatrical release on august 2.
