Ranbir Kapoor's candid conversation with Nikhil Kamath on the 'People by WTF podcast has been all over the internet for a couple of days. Here’s everything that the actor said on the podcast

On his relationship with his father

While mentioning that his bond with his father was always distant, Ranbir recalled the time when his father was in New York for treatment. He also said he feels guilty that he couldn’t let go of the distance between him and his father. “The one year we spent together in New York while his treatment was on, he often spoke about that. I was there for 45 days and one day he came and started crying. He has never shown that kind of weakness to me. It was so awkward for me because I didn’t know if I should hold him or hug him; I realized the distance. I feel guilty that I didn’t have the grace to let go of the distance between us and go and hug him, give him some love. You are also brought up a certain way where you’re told, ‘Now you are responsible’ and then certain things play on your mind, I have my mother, sister, wife, a child, and my father passes away… Can I show my weakness? I don’t know what it is, but I just didn’t show it.”

On Rishi Kapoor's 'rude behaviortowards fans making him 'grounded'

The actor said that Rishi Kapoor's occasionally rude behavior towards fans made him determined to be more approachable. He mentioned that Rishi Kapoor would sometimes refuse fans' requests for autographs and photos, saying, “No, I am not interested in doing that!” Ranbir recalled seeing fans' disappointment in such moments and resolved never to decline a fan's request. “I would see the fan’s face, and they would look at my father with so much disdain and disappointment. If somebody wants a picture with me or an autograph, I’m more than happy to oblige,” he added

On his parents’ marriage

Ranbir said, “Anybody who speaks in a louder tone, it disturbed me, since childhood. My parents went through a lot of fights. We lived in a bungalow, so I have spent most of my childhood on the staircases, hearing them fight. I was always scared and on the edge. I think they were both going through a rough patch. My sister wasn’t around, so I kind of felt responsible. My mother used to talk about her feelings to me. But, my father wasn’t that expressive. I never understood or heard his point of view.”

On his father’s death

He said, "When I was spending the night at the hospital, the doctor told me, 'This is his last night, he is going to go anytime soon,I remember going up to the room and having a panic attack. I didn't know how to express myself, there was too much happening that was to take. But I don't think I have grieved, understood the loss.

On his marriage with Alia

Ranbir spoke about the challenges of marriage and how alia is making changes in herself. "When you’re in a marriage, you have to let go of your personality. She’s also letting go of her personality. We’re adjusting to each other to make it liveable for each other. Any marriage is doing that. You have to let go, you have to adjust, you have to sacrifice facets of it. It’s impossible for two people to like each other the way they are,Ranbir said.

Adding further, he said, “She (Alia) used to speak in a very loud tone. I think my father's tone, growing up, always rattled me. So she made efforts to change that. And that's not easy when you've lived 30 years of your life speaking in a certain way. She's someone who instinctively reacts like if Raha falls, there's a reaction that throws me off. She makes certain efforts to put me at ease. I hope I could say there's something I did to put her at ease, but I don't think I've done it yet.”

On his playboy image and rumours of cheating in his past relationships

He said, “When I started, I was always regarded as this playboy guy, who was just dating actresses. Let me tell you- I was in NYC for three years nine months – from 2000 to 2003. I didn’t date one girl. I was always an aashiq… So, I made myself believe that my first girlfriend in school when I left for New York, even though I was not with her, I made myself believe that she was the love of my life. And now it’s overlet’s just focus on work. Of course, I dated two very successful actresses and that just became my identity. That he is a Casanova, I was labeled a cheater for a very large part of my life and I still am. I don’t care about it because it’s not entirely true. People don’t know the entire story and I would never speak about somebody like this in public because it’s a very private thing. But, things were spoken about and if it makes that person happy, I don’t have any conflict with that person.”

Ranbir dated deepika padukone for two years. They broke up in 2009 amid rumors that Ranbir had cheated on her with katrina Kaif. Ranbir and katrina were in a relationship from 2010 to 2016.
