In an interview given to bollywood Hungama, anand l rai revealed that ranbir kapoor was initially the first choice for the film. anand l rai said that if I had faith in myself, I would have made Tanu Weds manu 2, but Himanshu and I felt that a film like Raanjhanaa needed to be told. He praised Ranbir a lot and said that he adapts himself to every kind of role. Anand L Rai said- He is such an actor who keeps himself simple and dissolves himself in the role, which is a difficult thing. This is Ranbir 

Kapoor but he was not available at that time. We were looking for another actor at that time and we found Dhanush.
