Kangana Ranaut Responds to Controversy Over Netflix’s "IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack"

Actor and politician kangana ranaut took to X on monday to express her frustration over what she perceives as selective censorship. Her comments come amid controversy surrounding Netflix’s series, "IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack," which some social media users have criticized for allegedly obscuring the true identities of the terrorists involved in the 1999 hijacking.

In her post, kangana echoed concerns raised by bjp leader amit Malviya, who claimed that the series altered the Muslim names of the hijackers to non-Muslim names, accusing it of "whitewashing" the traumatic event. kangana argued that OTT platforms allow excessive violence and nudity without censorship but restrict nationalist perspectives and historical accuracy in films. She lamented that such selective censorship undermines efforts to portray India’s history and integrity.

Her remarks followed the postponement of her film "Emergency," which she has previously claimed is facing difficulties in obtaining certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). kangana criticized the film industry for allowing alleged distortions of historical facts while imposing barriers on projects that promote nationalistic themes.

Amit Malviya had previously criticized the series, suggesting that by using non-Muslim names for the hijackers, the show could mislead viewers into believing that Hindus were responsible for the hijacking, which he claims is part of a broader leftist agenda to obscure the true nature of the terrorists’ identities.

The controversy intensified as Netflix was summoned to New delhi on september 2 to address the backlash. "IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack," directed by Anubhav Sinha, began streaming on Netflix on august 29. The series, starring actors like Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, and Pankaj Kapur, dramatizes the 1999 hijacking of an indian plane by five terrorists. The stand-off, which lasted eight days, concluded with the release of key terrorists in exchange for the hostages.
