There is a lot of controversy over the web series 'IC 814' based on the hijacking of indian Airlines plane by Pakistan-based terrorist organization Harkat-ul-Mujahideen in 1999. Netflix India's content head monica Shergill has been directed to appear before them on tuesday to give clarification on the alleged controversial aspects of the web series.


Why is 'IC 814' controversy happening?

Let us tell you that this web series is directed by anubhav sinha and is inspired by the book 'Flight Into Fear: The Captain's Story' by the flight's captain Devi sharan and journalist Srinjoy Chaudhary. IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack was released on Netflix india on august 29. The six-episode series is based on the real-life incident of december 1999, when indian Airlines flight 814 from Kathmandu to New delhi was hijacked. The flight was forced to land at several places before Kandahar in Afghanistan, which was under the rule of the Taliban.


The hijackers of IC 814 are described in the series as Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola and Shankar. The names of the hijackers as Bhola and shankar have sparked outrage on social media as netizens criticized the use of Hindu names for potential terrorists. netizens have trended "Boycott Netflix" on X. At the same time, director anubhav sinha is also being criticized for deliberately using Hindu names for the kidnappers instead of their real names.
