Matt Reeves Explains Why Batman Won't Appear in the Penguin Series

In The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, the film was lauded for its intricate world-building and exploration of complex characters. The upcoming Penguin series, featuring Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, is set in the same universe but will not include Pattinson’s Dark Knight.

In an interview with tv Insider, Reeves explained that the focus is on Cobblepot and other characters, rather than Batman. He expressed concerns that Batman’s presence could overshadow Cobblepot’s storyline in Gotham. "We did talk about doing it, but it needed to be earned," Reeves noted, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a unique perspective in the series. He explained, “Batman is such a powerful figure that if he comes in, he could mess the narrative in a way. We wanted this to be Oz’s moment.”

Executive producer Dylan Clark added that while Batman won’t appear, there remains a strong connection to The Batman film. The series maintains the dark, stylish vibe established in the movie and takes place just one week after its events, setting the stage for the sequel. There are hints that the Joker, portrayed by Barry Keoghan, may also appear, following his brief introduction in the film’s end credits.

The eight-part series will follow Cobblepot as he seeks to take control of Gotham’s criminal underworld after Carmine Falcone's death. In addition to Farrell, the cast includes Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen.
