Union sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya wrote a letter to gymnast Dipa karmakar on wednesday and expressed surprise at her decision to retire from the sport. Dipa, who impressed in the Rio olympics 2016, recently said goodbye to her international career. 31-year-old Dipa was India's first female gymnast to participate in the Olympics. She missed the medal by a very narrow margin and finished fourth.

Mandaviya wrote in the letter to Dipa, I came to know about your retirement from gymnastics. I am surprised at your decision but I am confident that you must have taken this decision keeping in mind the important priorities and experiences of life. I fully respect your decision. Your gymnastics journey began at the age of just six years. It has been extremely inspiring. You have faced many difficulties in this sport touched the heights of success and made the country proud. Being honored with prestigious awards like Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and padma shri is proof of your unique contribution.

The sports Minister said that the whole country is proud of Dipa who regularly performs the very difficult Produnova vault. Mandaviya said, your adding a new chapter to indian gymnastics by participating in the olympics and becoming the first indian woman to participate in this sport is not only the result of your hard work but is a matter of pride for the whole country, especially your performance in the Produnova vault has been unique. Your achievements have not only inspired sports lovers but have also given courage to our daughters in particular to realize their dreams in sports.
