Alert regarding cyclonic storm Dana, which can cause havoc in Odisha-Bengal, to keep schools and colleges closed

Due to the impact of the storm, heavy rains and thunderstorms can occur in many areas of Odisha.


According to the Meteorological Department, a deep pressure area formed in the Bay of bengal on october 21, which is turning into a cyclonic storm. It is expected to hit the northern coast of odisha on october 23. With Cyclone Dana moving northwest, it is very likely to reach the northwest Bay of bengal off the Odisha-West bengal coasts by the morning of october 24. The statement said, 'Moving northwestward, it is very likely to cross the coasts of North odisha and West bengal between puri and Sagar Island during the night of october 24 and the morning of october 25, 2024. It will be a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 100-120 kmph.' It said regular alerts and advisories are being issued to Paradip and Haldia ports on the changing situation.


The weather department believes that the cyclonic storm may cause heavy rainfall in Ganjam, puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Angul, Khurda, Nayagarh and cuttack districts of Odisha. The government has ordered the closure of schools in these districts from october 23-25.


Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi said after a review meeting on the state's preparedness to deal with cyclone 'Dana', "It will be ensured that there is no loss of life. There is no need to panic. The government is fully prepared to deal with the situation. 100% evacuation will be done after identifying vulnerable areas. Teams of NDRF, ODRAF, and fire service have been kept ready. The government is closely monitoring the situation. Cyclone shelters will be equipped with all basic needs and essential items. Discussions were also held for early restoration of power and water supply and telephone and road communication. Uninterrupted power will be ensured to hospitals. The concerned departments are already keeping a close watch to prevent hoarding or overpricing of essential commodities.'


The NDRF has kept 14 teams ready for deployment in West bengal and 11 teams in Odisha given the cyclonic storm approaching in the Bay of Bengal. The storm is likely to hit between puri and Sagar Island on Thursday. In a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan was told that additional rescue and relief teams of the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard as well as boats and aircraft have also been kept ready.
