However, there came a time in the life of this couple when they had to face a lot of difficulties. In his autobiography The Substance and the Shadow, dilip kumar has confirmed that 16 years after marrying saira Banu, he married Asma Rehman for some time. He revealed in his book that saira had come to know about the marriage from news reports and was saddened. After all, Dilip - in his own words - had promised to never marry again while marrying Saira.

dilip kumar revealed in his book- 'In 1982, when the news broke that I had married Asma and saira read the sensational 'revelation' in a tabloid, it was very painful for me to console her because she trusted me and loved me unconditionally. I was not at home when saira read this news and to be honest, neither she nor her mother believed it because they had complete faith in me and at the time of Nikaah with saira, I had sincerely promised that there was no question of a second marriage and there should be no talk about it.'
Stayed with me even after suffering pain
dilip kumar further wrote- I can never forget or forgive myself for the hurt I caused to saira and the breaking of her unwavering faith in me. It is important to say that even in a situation when a self-respecting woman can do nothing but hate the man who insulted her, my wife saira supported me when I admitted my grave mistake and asked her to give me some time to rectify that mistake through proper legal procedures and restore our marriage of sixteen years.
