Due to the unusual circumstances surrounding this case, the magistrate before the accused was produced had to intervene. The magistrate suggested that both lawyers should jointly represent the accused.
Earlier in the day, the police told the media that the alleged attacker, Mohammed Shariful islam Shahzad, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested in thane city. He is accused of illegally entering Saif's house in Bandra with the intention of theft. Shahzad was produced before the Metropolitan Magistrate court in Bandra this afternoon amid heavy police presence. The court asked him if he had any complaint against the police, to which Shehzad replied negatively. He was then taken to the accused's dock at the back of the courtroom. A lawyer came forward claiming to represent the accused.
However, just before the accused was to sign the Vakalatnama, a dramatic turn of events occurred when another lawyer entered the accused's box and took Shehzad's signature on the Vakalatnama, leading to confusion over who would appear on behalf of the alleged attacker.
To calm the situation, the magistrate suggested both the lawyers represent Shahzad. "Both of you may appear," the magistrate said, bringing the focus back to the custody proceedings. Both lawyers agreed. Before arresting the accused, the police had detained several people resembling him based on footage from a CCTV camera in actor Saif ali Khan's building.
