His comment was criticized across the country, after which the government is now going to take a tough stand on such content. In fact, in the last few years, the number of content showing 'obscenity and violence' on online platforms has not only increased but complaints are also coming continuously. What has been said about freedom of expression in the Constitution?
Article 19(1)(a) of the indian Constitution gives the right that 'all persons in the country are free to express their opinion and share their ideology. But, there are some limitations on this right. The main purpose of this law is to prevent harmful or objectionable content being uploaded on the Internet.
Under these rules, social media, OTT platforms and wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital media platforms are given some responsibilities. Such as monitoring the content of users, and immediately removing any content from the platform if it seems illegal, violent, or obscene.
Under the IT Rules 2024, these platforms also have to tell who has posted the content. Apart from this, social media companies are also responsible to appoint a chief officer and take action on complaints within 24 hours.
