Sanam Teri Kasam, Starring harshvardhan rane And Mawra Hocane, Breaks Re-Release Records, Surpasses Tumbbad And Ghilli

Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane starrer 'Sanam Teri Kasamhas become the highest-grossing re-released film in India.

The rise of re-releases in indian cinema is turning into a successful trend and it suggests that moviegoers are more eager to relive familiar stories rather than explore fresh narratives. This trend has become particularly evident with the record-breaking success of 'Sanam Teri Kasam(2016). harshvardhan rane and Mawra Hocane starrer has become the highest-grossing re-released film in India. The film has dethroned the critically acclaimed 'Tumbbad,which previously held the top spot in 2024 among re-released films. 


Sanam Teri Kasam creates a record

‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ has amassed a staggering Rs 37.72 crore net in 13 days —far surpassing its original theatrical earnings of Rs 9.1 crore net. The global box office figures for the film have soared past Rs 53 crore, cementing its place as the highest-grossing re-released film in India. 


'Tumbbad,’ which originally earned Rs 13.5 crore net in its initial theatrical run, found an entirely new audience during its four-week re-release. The film witnessed an extraordinary resurgence, making Rs 13.15 crore in just its first week back in cinemas. The momentum continued into the second week, nearly matching the previous week's earnings at Rs 11.5 crore, ultimately closing its run with an impressive Rs 30.50 crore net. 


The tamil blockbuster "Ghilli,starring Vijay and trisha and directed by Dharani, was one of the first re-releases to break the Rs 30 crore barrier. Its resurgence even outperformed the re-releases of legendary films like ’Avatar’ and 'Sholay. 


Sanam Teri Kasam sequel

Meanwhile, the overwhelming demand for 'Sanam Teri Kasamhas led to the announcement of a sequel, produced by deepak Mukut and soham Rockstar Entertainment. 


Director Vinay Sapru told Hindustan Times that the idea for 'Sanam Teri Kasam 2had been conceived alongside the original film. He said, “Sanam Teri Kasam begins with a flashback. We wrote part two of the film at that time only. We wanted to go ahead with a second part, but unfortunately, for whatever reason, we couldn’t. Nobody even asked for it all this while, until now. This confusion has been happening because of the interviews. I want to put it on record once and for all: There will be another story of love and promises that will arrive on Valentine’s in 2026."
