Kannada actress Ranya Rao was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on march 3 at Kempegowda international airport (KIA) on charges of gold smuggling. After the arrest of the actress, she was produced before the Special Court, from where she was sent to 14 days judicial custody. 14.8 kg of gold was also seized from the actress at the airport. The actress is the daughter of director General of police (Police Housing Corporation) Ramachandra Rao. She has also worked in the film 'Manikya' (2014) with famous actor Sudeep. Ranya, a native of Chikmagalur in Karnataka, studied engineering at Dayananda Sagar college of Engineering in Bengaluru before joining the film industry. She made her acting debut in 2014 with the kannada film Manikya, directed and starring Sudeep. In the film, she played the actor's girlfriend. The actress then entered tamil cinema with the 2016 film 'Wagah' opposite vikram Prabhu. In 2017, the actress returned to kannada cinema with 'Patki', playing a journalist opposite actor Ganesh.

The DRI found that she had traveled to dubai four times in the last 15 days, following which the agency started tracking her movements. Based on this intelligence, DRI officials reached the airport two hours before Ranya's arrival on march 3. She had arrived from dubai on an Emirates flight and was taken into custody at the Bengaluru airport around 7 pm on Monday.


According to reports, officials are investigating the matter to find out whether she worked independently or was part of a larger smuggling network operating between dubai and India.
