An actor, film director, screenwriter, lyricist, and editor, he has now retired from the industry. A recipient of the countrywide film award, he was honored with the padma shri in 1992 and later acquired the dadasaheb phalke Award, India's highest honor in cinema, in 2015 for his contributions to indian movies and the humanities.
Born in Pakistan, he later moved to Delhi, where he studied at Hindu University. A massive admirer of dilip Kumar, he changed his name from Harikrishan Goswami to Manoj Kumar after being stimulated via Kumar's persona within the 1949 movie Shabnam.
