Kanyakumari has been flooded now and it seems like the flood has been overtaken by the Ockhi storm. people are frozen in fear as temples and houses are in danger of sinking. In Kanyakumari, the normal life of the people has been severely affected due to the floodwaters in the residences, temples, and roads. Water has accumulated up to the waist in the Vettuvanni Iyappan temple near Marthandam. Similarly, the temples on the banks of the river Tamiraparani are surrounded by water. As a result, traffic has been disrupted due to waterlogging on Kuzhithurai-Arumana Road, Marthandam-Tengaipattinam Road, Pudukkadai-Nithiravilai Road, Arumana-Kaliyal Road, and Gnaranvilai -Thikkurichi Road. Similarly, most of the houses in Thikkurichi, Gnaranvilai, Kuzhithurai, Sennithottam, Mankadu, and Munjirai have been flooded.
People have been severely affected as houses in the Therakalputhoor area have been flooded. As a result, it has been reported that food and drinking water are not available. Also, the Velliyakulam in the Colachel area suddenly broke and water came out of it and infiltrated into the houses in the nearby Singankavu residential area. The fire force and the police immediately rescued the commoners. Those who were then trapped at home with their three-month-old twins were rescued safely in waist-deep floodwaters. Due to the continuous influx of rainwater into the area, there is a risk of flooding all over the ground floor of the houses. In this connection, some people of Kumari district said, ‘Even during the Ockhi storm, Kanyakumari district did not receive this much rainfall’.
