A consultative meeting was held at the General secretariat under the chairmanship of tamil Nadu Highways and Minor Ports minister EV Velu. During the meeting, minister EV Velu inquired about the condition of ships controlled by the government of tamil Nadu. It is customary for the government of tamil Nadu to purchase various goods at different times. There is a tendency to set aside funds for new items because the items purchased under the previous regime were defective. At present, it has been decided to purchase a new ship on behalf of the government of tamil Nadu. Poompuhar Shipping Corporation was established by the government of tamil Nadu to bring in the domestic coal required for the power generation of the tamil Nadu Power Generation and Distribution Corporation. The three ships owned by the company, MV tamil Anna, MV tamil Periyar, and MV tamil Kamaraj, were sold in 2018 due to disability and high maintenance costs.
The Poompuhar Shipping Corporation has been carrying out the work of bringing in ships. Therefore, ways to improve the efficiency of coal and other commodities to make it a profitable system were explored. Following this, the tamil Nadu government is planning to buy new ships again for the Poompuhar Shipping Corporation. The consultation meeting was chaired by the minister of Highways and Minor Ports EV Velu. It was attended by Dheeraj Kumar, Principal Secretary, Department of Highways and Minor Ports, Sivasanmukaraja, Chairman and Managing Director, Poompuhar Shipping Corporation, and senior officials.
