
Semman Quarry case filed 11 years ago.. raid at minister Ponmudi's house.. Background?

CHENNAI: The enforcement department is conducting raids at the house of Higher education minister Ponmudi from 7 am today. In connection with the Semman Quarry case registered 11 years ago, enforcement officials are conducting a search at minister Ponmudi's house.
Parapara raid at Ponmudi House: The enforcement department is conducting raids at the house of minister and DMK Deputy General Secretary Ponmudi from 7 am today. In chennai and Villupuram, minister Ponmudi is conducting raids at the relevant places. Inspection is being conducted at 9 places related to Ponmudi.
The enforcement agencies are conducting raids at minister Ponmudi's house in Saitappet, Villupuram Shanmugapuram, Ponmudi's son mp Kaudhasikamani's house and office. It appears that the investigation is being conducted on the basis of a case registered 11 years ago.
What is the case?: The current higher education minister K. Ponmudi and his son, Kallakurichi constituency mp Pon. Gautamashikamani, have alleged that the excessive use of Semman in the Semman Quarry in Bhootura village near Vanur in Villupuram district has caused a revenue loss of Rs.28 crore to the government. In 2012, Villupuram crime branch police registered a case against 7 DMK administrators Kothakumar, Sadanandhan, Jayachandran, raja Mahendran and Gopinath.
Following this, Ponmudi went into hiding with his son Gautamashigamani. Both had sought anticipatory bail before the court. But Ponmudi was arrested as he did not get anticipatory bail. Later he was imprisoned in Trichy Jail. 3 persons including his son Gautama Chikamani surrendered in the Villupuram court.
Semman Quarry Case: The trial of this case is going on in Villupuram Principal district Sessions Court. During the hearing held last week this month, minister Ponmudi and others were not present. Following this, Judge purnima ordered the further hearing of the case to be postponed to July 17 (today).
Meanwhile, minister Ponmudi's son gautham Chikamani filed a case in madras high court seeking cancellation of the Semman Quarry case against them. The madras high court, which conducted an inquiry into the matter, refused to stay the trial of the case against minister Ponmudi and others, and recently ordered to allow the trial to continue.
In this situation, the enforcement department is conducting raids at the places related to minister Ponmudi and mp Gautamashikamani. A raid is being conducted on Ponmudi and others as the Semman Quarry case is scheduled to be heard again in the Villupuram court today.
