government has decided to implement 27 per cent reservation in gujarat civic elections.

According to political experts, the state government will get its benefit in the upcoming lok sabha elections as
well. The BJP-led government on tuesday (August 29) announced 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward
Classes (OBCs) in bodies like panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations based on a commission
report, paving the way for elections to these bodies. Done. However, in areas notified under the Panchayats
(Extension to Scheduled Areas) (PESA) Act, most of which have a sizeable tribal population. Reservation for
OBCs in local bodies will continue at 10 percent.
What did the supreme court say on OBC reservation?
The gujarat government said that apart from this, the existing quota for Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes
would remain unchanged, thereby not violating the cap of 50 per cent reservation. Earlier, OBC reservation in
local bodies in gujarat was 10 per cent. The announcement, based on the Justice Jhaveri Commission report, has
been made ahead of the lok sabha elections and will pave the way for holding local body elections, which were
postponed due to the pending reservation issue. The supreme court had ordered that reservation for OBCs
should be based on their population.
