In the by-election held at Bageshwar assembly seat of uttarakhand, bjp candidate Parvati Das has defeated

Congress’s Basant Kumar. Parvati Das defeated the congress leader by a margin of 2810 votes. By-elections

on this seat of Kumaon division were held on september 5, in which 55.44 percent voting took place. bjp has

been winning this assembly seat for two decades.

By-election was held on this vacant seat due to the death of bharatiya janata party (BJP) mla Chandan Ram

Das, who was the Transport minister in the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami cabinet, due to illness in

April this year. A total of five candidates were trying their luck in the by-election, but the main contest was

between the ruling party bjp and the opposition party Congress.

Giving ticket to a turncoat proved costly for Congress

bjp fielded Parvati Das, wife of Chandan ram Das, while congress fielded Basant Kumar against her. Kumar

had contested the last assembly elections in 2022 on aam aadmi party (AAP) ticket and had left AAP and

joined congress just before the by-elections. Apart from bjp and congress, Samajwadi party, Uttarakhand

Kranti Dal and uttarakhand Parivartan party also fielded their candidates. However, giving ticket to the

turncoat proved costly for the Congress.

Counting of votes in Bageshwar by-election started at 8 am. In the first round, congress candidate Basant

Kumar was leading by 754 votes. After which Parvati Devi went ahead of Basant Kumar in the second round.

And in the third round, bjp was one vote ahead of the congress candidate. After this Parvati Das did not look

back and gradually made a decisive lead and won the election. This is a big relief for the ruling bjp in the

state before the 2024 elections.
